Crochet Squares Hat

RED HEART “Fiesta”: 1 Skein 6013 Wheat.

Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9].

Yarn needle.

Hat fits most women.

GAUGE: Square = 5″ x 5″. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

NOTE: Squares can be sewn together OR joined together on the last round. If joining, work the first square through Rnd 5, then join subsequent squares while working Joining Rnd 5.

SQUARE: Ch 8; join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 16 sc in ring; join with a sl st in first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 4, [dc in next sc, ch 1] 15 times; join with a sl st in 3rd ch of ch-4.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, * 2 sc in next sp, ch 3, skip next dc, 2 sc in next sp **, sc in next dc; rep from * around, end at **; join in first sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, * 9 dc in next ch-3 sp, skip next 2 sc, sl st in next sc, (4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) all in next ch-3 sp, skip next 2 sc **, sl st in next sc; rep from * around, end at **; join in first ch-1.

Rnd 5: Sl st in first 4 dc, [sl st in 5th dc of 9-dc group, ch 5, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, skip next 9 sts] 4 times, join in 5th sl st. Fasten off.

Joining Rnd 5: Sl st in first 4 dc, sl st in 5th dc of 9-dc group, ch 5, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in next ch-3 sp; ch 1, hold squares with wrong sides together and sl st in any corner ch-3 sp of adjoining square, ch 1, 2 dc in same corner sp on working square, ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 sp of adjoining square, ch 1, 2 dc in same corner sp on working square, ch 5, sl st in 5th dc of 9-dc group on working square, sl st in corresponding sl st of adjoining square, ch 5, 2 dc in next ch-3 sp on working square, ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 sp in adjoining square, ch 1, 2 dc in same corner sp on working square, ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp in adjoining square, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in same corner sp on working square – one side joined; complete square as written.

Join on 2 or 4 sides as required, noting that to join 4 sides for top of hat, begin joining at first sl st in 5th dc of 9-dc group and at the next ch-2 sp before the first corner.

HAT

Make 4 squares and join or sew together to form a circle. Make a 5th square and join or sew on top of circle.

Hat Brim

Rnd 1: With right side facing, join yarn in corner of any square; ch 1, work 16 sc evenly spaced across each square; join to first sc – 64 sc.

Rnds 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
