CROCHET HOOK

M/13 (9.00 mm) andK/10½ (6.50 mm) crochet hooks, OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

GAUGE

7 dc and 4 rows to 4”/10 cm, using M/13 (9.00 mm) crochet hook;

(Note: Be sure to check your gauge before starting to crochet. If the gauge is larger, change to a smaller hook size, or work tightly. If it is smaller, change to a larger hook size, or work loosely.)

SPECIAL STITCH

“butterfly wing” – (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc), (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, 2 dc), or (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, 2 dc)

INSTRUCTIONS

Notes:

  1. Instructions are written for the smallest size with changes for larger sizes given in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
  2. A hat is worked in rounds from top to bottom.
  3. Ch 3 (4) at beg of rounds count as dc throughout.
  4. For ease in working, circle all numbers pertaining to size you’re making.
  5. To avoid mistake(s), count stitches in each round, or row when finished.

HAT

With MC, and larger hook, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. Also, you may begin with “magic ring”. A lot of video tutoring is at YouTube for this.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as dc), work 6 (7, 8, 9) dc in ring; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 7 (8, 9, 10) dc.

Rnd 2: (Ch 5, sc, ch 2, dc) in same st, * (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc) in next st, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 5 – 7 (8, 9, 10) petals.

Rnd 3: (Ch 5, sc, ch 2, dc) in same space, skip 7 sts, * (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc) = “butterfly wing” in next space between two dc, skip 7 sts, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 5 – 7 (8, 9, 10) “butterfly wings“.

Rnd 4: (Ch 4, dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, skip “butterfly wing”, * (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) = “butterfly wing” in next sp, skip “butterfly wing”, rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 4 – 7 (8, 9, 10) “butterfly wings“.

Rnd 5: Repeat Rnd 4 once.

Rnd 6: (Ch 4, dc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, skip “butterfly wing”, * (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) = “butterfly wing” in next sp, skip “butterfly wing”, rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 4 – 7 (8, 9, 10) “butterfly wings“.

Next Rnd(s): Repeat last rnd 2 (3, 4, 4) times, or until hat measures 6.75 (7.75, 8.5, 8.5) inches / 17 (19.7, 21.6, 21.6) cm from beg.
Note: Fold the hat in half, then make flat, and measure from top of hat to the bottom edge.

Band

Rnd 1: With smaller hook, ch 3, dc in next dc, skip 3 sts, dc in ch-1 space, skip 3 sts, * dc in next 4 sts, skip 3 sts, dc in ch-1 sp, skip 3 sts, rep from * around, end dc in last two dc; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 35 (40, 45, 50) sts.

For sizes Child, Adult only

Rnd 2: Ch 3, FPdc around next st, * BPdc around next st, FPdc around next st; rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 40 (50) sts.

For sizes Toddler, Teen/Adult only

Rnd 2: Ch 3, * FPdc around next st, BPdc around next st; rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 35 (45) sts.

For all sizes

Rnd 3: Rep last rnd once. Fasten off. Secure yarn to WS.

FLOWER

With A, and smaller hook, ch 4, join with slip st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, (sc in ring, ch 3) 6 times; join with slip st to first sc – 6 ch-3 spaces.

Rnd 2: Slip st in first ch-3 space, ch 1, (sc, 3 dc, sc) in same space and in each ch-3 sp around; join with slip st to first sc – 6 petals.
Fasten off. Secure yarn to WS.

FINISHING

Sew Flower to Hat as shown in picture.
