Materials Needed:
- Double knit (weight 3) yarn
- 5 mm crochet hook
Pattern:
Starting Chain:
Make a slip knot, then chain in multiples of two to match the desired blanket width.
Row 1:
Into the second chain from the hook, make a half double crochet (HDC).
Skip a chain, then make two HDCs into the following chain.
Continue across: skip a chain, then 2 HDCs in the next chain until you have two chains left.
Skip one chain, make one HDC into the final chain, then turn your work.
Chainless Starting for Row 2 and Beyond:
Stretch the loop on your hook a little, yarn over, and make an HDC right into the first stitch.
It might be hard to identify the stitch because of the chainless start, so marking it with a stitch marker is suggested to avoid confusion.
Row 2 and Following Rows:
Work 2 HDCs between the 2 HDCs from the row below, not into the loops but right below.
Make sure to pull the stitches a bit to give them height, keeping the blanket light and airy.
Continue to the end of the row. When you have two stitches left, skip one and make an HDC into the last stitch.
Turn your work, start the next row with a chainless start, and place a stitch marker.
Repeating:
Continue repeating these steps for every row to build up the blanket to your desired length. Remember to give the HDCs a bit of height to maintain the blanket’s light and airy texture.
Blanket Edging:
Starting the Edging:
Turn your work, chain one, and make a single crochet (SC) into the first stitch.
Skip one stitch, then in the following make 2 SCs.
At the corner, work 3 SCs to turn the corner smoothly.
Continue the pattern of skipping one stitch and making 2 SCs in the next around the blanket's edge, adjusting as needed to keep the edge smooth.
Scallop Edge Final Round:
Start by chaining one, then make 3 HDCs into the first corner.
Into the next stitch, make a slip stitch, followed by 3 HDCs into the following stitch.
Alternate between slip stitching and making 3 HDCs in each subsequent stitch all the way around the blanket.
Finish the round by slip stitching to the beginning of the round.
Fasten Off:
Cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop on your hook. Weave in the ends using a yarn needle, optionally splitting the yarn with a sharper needle to secure the tail better.
