For this project you will need:

  • HOOK: 5 mm hook or size H hook for the US
  • YARN: A skein of worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU
  • Tapestry Needle
  • 100 grams / 3.5. oz
  • 240 meters / 262 yards

ABBREVIATIONS

To start

Ch 3 and sl st in beg ch to form a ring

Round 1

Ch 2 and DC 12.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (12 sts)

Round 2

Ch 2 and DC 2 times in 1st st. DC 2 in all sts.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (24 sts)

Round 3

Ch 2 and DC 2 times in 1st st. * DC 1 in next st. DC 2 in next* Repeat for round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (36 sts)

Round 4 – Stop increasing here for Toddler Size

Ch 2 and DC 2 times in 1st st. * DC 1 in next 2 sts st. DC 2 in next* Repeat for round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (48 sts)

Round 5 – Size for Child and Adult

Ch 2 and DC 2 times in 1st st. * DC 1 in next 3 sts st. DC 2 in next* Repeat for round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (60 sts) or Toddler size (48 sts)

Round 6 – Jagged Stitch Row

Another tip before you get started. You will always start your Jagged Crochet stitch row by grabbing the first DC post of the round. You will grab it up as though you are making a FPDC.

Never use the Ch 2 to make your 1st Jagged crochet stitch of your row.

*YO and grab the post of the DC

YO and only pull through 2 sts leaving 2 loops on the hook.

Be sure to not YO over, just

insert your hook into the next DC and pull up a loop,

YO and pull through 2, YO and pull through 2 just like a

normal DC at that point.

Then Chain One – This is very important! *

Repeat this for the whole round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (60 sts) or Toddler size (48 sts)


IMPORTANT TIP

Skip the next DC post because you used this stitch for the second part of your Jagged Stitch. Remember this stitch takes TWO stitches to complete. You’ll always be using every other DC post on your row. You’ll always be using every other DC post on your round.


Round 7 – this is a prep row.

This is how you’ll crochet your DC’s after a row of Jagged sts

CH 2 and *grab up the BLO of the next DC and DC. Then DC in ch 1 space*

Repeat this for the whole round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (60 sts) or Toddler size (48 sts)

Round 8 – Jagged Stitch Row

*YO and grab the post of the DC

YO and only pull through 2 sts leaving your last loop on the hook.

then moving over to the next DC, WITHOUT a YO,

insert your hook into the next DC and pull up a loop,

YO and pull through 2, YO and pull through 2 just like a

normal DC at that point.

Then Chain One – This is very important! *

Repeat this for the whole round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (60 sts) or Toddler size (48 sts)


For both SIZE hats:

Repeat rounds 7 and 8 To complete a full Jagged stitch row. You should have 2 full rounds now. Let’s continue.

Repeat Rounds 7 and 8 two more times to give you 4 full rounds of Jagged stitches.

If you want a longer slouch hat or bigger hat, just add more jagged stitch rows to your liking.


Round 13 (this is a repeat of row 7)

This is how you’ll crochet your DC’s after a row of Jagged sts

CH 2 *grab up the BLO of the next DC and DC. Then DC in ch 1 space*

Repeat this for the whole round.

Skip beg ch 2 and sl st in beg DC (60 sts) or Toddler size (48 sts)

Rounds 14 – 16 – THE RIM

Ch 1 and sc in same beg st. sc in all sts. (60 sts) or Toddler size (48 sts)
