Crochet Baby Cap

Materials needed:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet Hook

Starting the Rib (Bottom of the Cap)

Use a 3mm crochet hook and start with a slip knot.

Chain 5 stitches. Adjust to 4, 6, or 7 chains for a wider or narrower rib.

Chain 1 extra stitch.

Starting from the second chain from the hook, make 1 single crochet in each chain across (5 single crochet stitches).

Chain 1, turn work.

Skip the chain just made. In the next chain, make 1 single crochet into the back loop only.

Continue working single crochet stitches into the back loop only for the remaining stitches in the row.

Repeat (chain 1, turn, single crochet in back loops) for 72 rows, reaching 14 to 14.5 inches in length.


Joining the Rib

After completing the 72 rows, chain 1.

Fold the rib, aligning the last row with the starting chain.

Insert the hook into the first chain of the last row and the corresponding back loop of the first chain of the starting row.

Join with a slip stitch and continue to join the remaining stitches with slip stitches.

Chain 1 after the last slip stitch to secure the join.

Starting the Main Cap Pattern

After joining the rib, work along the edge of the rib.

Make 1 single crochet stitch in each raised and recessed section, resulting in 72 single crochet stitches.

Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet stitch.


Pattern Row 1 (Single Crochet and Chain)

Chain 1.

In the same chain where you slip-stitched, make 1 single crochet.

Chain 1.

Skip the next chain, make 1 single crochet in the following chain.

Repeat (chain 1, skip 1 chain, single crochet in next) around.

Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Pattern Row 2 (Double Crochet and Single Crochet)

Turn work.

Chain 1.

In the same chain where you slip-stitched, make 1 single crochet.

Yarn over and make 1 double crochet in the chain space below.

Make 1 single crochet in the next single crochet stitch.

Make 1 double crochet in the next chain space below.

Repeat (single crochet, double crochet) around.

Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.


Changing Colors

Always join the new color with a slip stitch.

If changing colors every two rows, leave the yarn on the wrong side.

For every row color change, leave the yarn on the back side.

Repeating Pattern Rows

Turn work.

Chain 1 and repeat (chain 1, skip 1 stitch, single crochet in next stitch) around.

Join with a slip stitch, changing colors as described.

Repeat the pattern rows (single crochet/chain and double crochet/single crochet) until the cap measures 6 inches in height.


Decreasing Stitches for the Top of the Cap

The remaining length will be completed with decreases.

Decrease Row 1: Combine every 7th and 8th stitch (single crochet and double crochet) around.

Decrease Row 2: Combine every 6th and 7th stitch.

Decrease Row 3: Combine every 5th and 6th stitch.

Repeat this decrease pattern until you reach the top of the cap.

Finishing the Top of the Cap

Once the cap reaches 6 inches, there will be a small hole at the top.

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.

Thread the tail through each of the remaining 9 chains around the hole.

Pull the tail to close the hole.

Secure by tying 2-3 knots with the yarn tail.

Attach a pom-pom to the top using a hand needle.

Weave in and trim any remaining yarn ends.
