Stitching Instructions for Making the Spiral Socks (Free Pattern):
Cuff:
- Using the 4.0 mm (G) hook, ch 10 (or adjust to desired cuff width).
- Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and across. Turn. (9 sc)
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc in back loops only (BLO) across. Turn. (9 sc)
- Repeat Row 2 until the cuff fits comfortably around the ankle (about 40–50 rows), or adjust for your desired cuff height.
- Join the ends with slip stitches (sl st) to form a tube. Do not fasten off.
Leg:
- Switch to the 5.0 mm (H) hook.
- Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the top edge of the cuff, ensuring you have a multiple of 4 sts. Sl st to the first sc to join.
- Round 2: Ch 1, (sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st), repeat from around. Sl st to join.
- Round 3: Ch 1, (tr in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st), repeat from around. Sl st to join.
- Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until the leg reaches the desired length (typically 6–8 inches), creating the spiral texture as you alternate rounds.
Heel:
- Work the heel flap in rows over half the stitches.
- Row 1: Ch 1, sc across half of the stitches. Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc across. Turn.
- Repeat Row 2 for about 10–12 rows to form a sturdy heel flap.
- For the heel turn: Row 1: Sc across until the center, sc2tog, sc to end. Turn.
- Row 2: Sc to the center, sc2tog, sc to end. Turn.
- Repeat until about one-third of the original stitches remain, shaping the heel cup.
Gusset and Foot:
- Pick up and sc along the sides of the heel flap to rejoin all stitches.
- Resume working in rounds, maintaining the spiral pattern established in the leg.
- Decrease on both sides every other round by sc2tog until the original stitch count is reached.
- Continue working the foot in the spiral pattern until the sock measures about 2 inches shorter than the full foot length (measure from back of heel to tip of toe).
Toe:
- Round 1: Sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, repeat around.
- Round 2: Sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog, repeat around.
- Continue decreasing every round until 8–10 stitches remain.
- Fasten off, weave yarn through remaining stitches, and pull tight to close the toe.
- Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
Tips & Finishing:
- Try the sock on during the gusset/foot stage to customize length and fit.
- Use stitch markers for the beginning of rounds and to mark decreases for a neater spiral.
- Block lightly if desired to even out stitches and enhance the spiral texture.
