Crochet Spiral Post Stitch Tutorial — Create a Textured Spiral Grid
The Spiral Post Stitch is a fun, textured crochet technique that creates a raised spiral grid by working around the stitch post instead of through the top loops. This tutorial shows the materials, abbreviations, specialty stitch (Front Post Double Treble Crochet, FPDTc), and a swatch pattern to practice the Spiral Post Stitch and build a repeating spiral grid in two-color stripes.

Sample swatch showing the Spiral Post Stitch in the colors Blush and Cosmopolitan.
Materials
- Mighty Stitch worsted weight in the colors Blush and Cosmopolitan
- 4 mm hook
Abbreviations – US Terminology
- Ch – Chain
- St(s) – Stitch(es)
- Sc – Single Crochet
- Blsc – Back Loop Single Crochet
- Yo – Yarn over
- Sk – Skip
Specialty Stitches
Fpdtc — Front Post Double Treble Crochet: Yo 3x, drop down 4 rows (include the current row in your count) & insert hook around the designated post stitch from front to back, yo and pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 4x.
Notes
- The Spiral Grid Stitch has a multiple of 4 + 3.
- Be sure to include the current row in your 4-row count when determining the placement of Fpdtc stitches.
- To change colors start your single crochet stitch as normal by inserting your hook into the indicated stitch and pulling up a loop (You should now have 2 loops on your hook). Drop the working yarn and yarn over with the new color of yarn, then pull through both loops on your hook.
- Do not fasten off after color changes. Carry your yarn up the side of your work and pick colors back up as you need them.

Quick tips: Practice the FPDTc on a small scrap before working your main project to get comfortable dropping down and working around the post stitches. Use the method described in Notes to change colors and carry yarn up the side rather than fastening off for a clean, two-color stripe effect.
