Finished Crochet Spiral Messy Bun Hat showing the spiral texture and top opening for a messy bun.

Materials

  • 5.5 mm (I/9) crochet hook
  • Worsted weight yarn — example: Red Heart Super Saver
  • Yarn needle for weaving ends

Size: Average–large (use a smaller hook or lighter yarn for a smaller gauge/fit)

Stitches used / Abbreviations

  • ch — chain
  • sc — single crochet
  • dc — double crochet
  • fpdc — front post double crochet
  • bpdc — back post double crochet
  • sl st — slip stitch

Pattern (worked in joined rounds)

  1. Begin: ch 30, sl st to join (working in the round; do not twist).
  2. Row 1: ch 2, dc in the same st, dc in each stitch around, sl st to join. (30 dc)
  3. Row 2: ch 2, fpdc in the dc from previous round, 2 dc in next space, repeat *fpdc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, sl st to join. (45 sts) — this part can be tricky; refer to my video below.
  4. Rows 3–12: ch 2, fpdc in the fpdc from previous round, 3 dc in next space, repeat *fpdc, 3 dc* around, sl st to join. (60 sts)
  5. Row 13: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around. (60 sc)
  6. Rows 14–15: ch 2, *fpdc, bpdc* repeat around, sl st to join. Fasten off at the end of Row 15.

Finishing & Tips

  • Adjust fit: to make the hat smaller, drop down a hook size and/or use a lighter-weight yarn; to make it larger, use a bigger hook or heavier yarn.
  • Gauge is flexible for this hat; try it on as you go to get the desired fit and depth.
  • Weave in ends neatly with a yarn needle. If you want a more structured opening for the bun, leave the last few rounds looser or block the top slightly.
  • If any round feels confusing, work slowly and count stitches; the video referenced in Row 2 demonstrates the fpdc/2-dc repeat which can help.

Enjoy wearing your spiral messy bun hat — it's a quick project that combines warmth with a practical opening for your bun or ponytail.
