Supplies: Yarn (choose weight and color to suit your look), an appropriate crochet hook, scissors. Optional: small jewelry clasp or beads if you want to finish the ends professionally.

About the chain stitch

The crochet chain stitch is the foundation of many crochet projects and the perfect stitch for simple jewelry. It’s easy to learn and lets you make necklaces in any length or color.

Steps

  1. Make a slip knot: Form a loop with your yarn and place it on the hook.
  2. Tighten: Pull the yarn to secure the slip knot on the hook, leaving the loop that won’t be counted as a stitch.
  3. Hold and tension: Hold the hook in your dominant hand and the yarn in the other to control tension.
  4. Yarn over (YO): Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front.
  5. Pull through: Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook — this creates one chain stitch.
  6. Repeat: Continue yarn over and pull through until you reach your desired necklace length. Count the V-shaped stitches (not the loop on the hook) to keep track.
  7. Finish: Cut the yarn leaving a tail, then pull that tail through the last loop to secure. To turn the chain into a necklace, tie the ends securely, weave in the tails, or attach a small jewelry clasp or beads as desired.

Tips: Use a lighter-weight yarn for a delicate look or a chunky yarn for a bold statement. Measure around your neck for preferred length before finishing. Practice a few chains to get comfortable with tension and stitch size.
