How to Crochet a Cozy Elf Hood — Easy One-Size Pattern

The Crochet Elf Hood is a whimsical, cozy accessory that adds a touch of charm to winter outfits. This easy, one-size pattern uses basic stitches (single crochet and half double crochet) and simple shaping so crocheters of many skill levels can make a playful hood with optional straps and a pom pom.

Materials

  • Yarn — more than half a skein (Forest Green mentioned in original notes/Red Heart)
  • Crochet hook — I/9 (5.50 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Pom pom maker (optional)

Abbreviations

  • SC = single crochet
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • CH = chain
  • SS = slip stitch

Gauge / Size: One size fits all (pattern worked to a length that will fit most heads; adjust rows if you need a different size).

Finished Crochet Elf Hood — handmade hood with a pointed top and optional pom pom for extra character.

Pattern

  1. CH 43.
  2. Row 1: SC across the entire foundation chain, turn.
  3. Row 2: HDC across the entire row, turn.
  4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2, alternating SC and HDC, until you reach Row 33. The finished rectangular piece will be worked horizontally.
  5. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise to form the hood shape and sew the top (pointed end) together to close the crown of the hood.
  6. Using a yarn needle and a short length of yarn, weave and secure the seam as needed for a neat finish.
  7. Finishing the face opening: Using your hook and yarn, work HDC around just the opening rim of the hood for 2 rows (from one end back to the other).
  8. When you reach the start of the opening, work a row of SC around the opening for a third row to complete the rim.
  9. Straps (make one for each side): Insert your hook at the bottom edge of the opening where you added the rim.
    1. Row 1 (strap): SC 3 across, turn.
    2. Row 2: HDC across the row, turn.
    3. Repeat alternating SC and HDC until the strap reaches Row 34 (or desired length).
    4. Finish by working SC around the entire strap for a tidy edge.
  10. Optional: Add a small pom pom to the top point of the hood for extra character.

Notes and tips:

  • If you prefer a different fit, adjust the number of rows before seaming the crown or change the starting chain to widen/narrow the hood.
  • Sew seams with matching yarn and a yarn needle for a seamless look. Weave in ends securely.
  • Make the straps shorter or longer to suit your style or to add ties that fasten under the chin.

Enjoy wearing your Crochet Elf Hood — a fun accessory for cold weather, costumes, or gift-making.
