Instructions:

To make this groundhog applique, you will need to crochet a large heart for the face, a small heart for the teeth, a round nose, and a top hat.

Face

With Color A medium weight # 4 yarn and crochet hook 5 mm, make magic ring;

Rnd 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring.

Rnd 2. Ch 3, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 DC in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1 St, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in Ch-1 St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 DC in next St, (DC, HDC) in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in first St, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in each of the next 3 Sts, Sl St in next St,

first Ear – Ch 3, SC in 2nd Ch from hook, DC in next Ch,

skip 2 Sts of previous Rnd, Sl St in next, (SC, HDC, SC) in next St (Heart point), Sl St in next St,

second Ear – Ch 3, SC in 2nd Ch from hook, DC in next Ch,

skip 2 Sts of previous Rnd, Sl St in next, SC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in last St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

Teeth

With white cotton thread size 3 and hook 2.75 mm, Ch 4;

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

Nose

With black cotton thread size 3 and hook 2.75 mm, make magic ring;

Rnd 1. Ch 1, 8 SC in ring, join with Sl St. Fasten off.

Hat

Note: Ch 1 at the beginning of the rows doesn’t count as a St.

With Color B medium weight # 4 and crochet hook 5 mm, Ch 6;

Row 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each of next 4 Chs. Total – 5 Sts. Turn.

Row 2. Ch 1, skip first St, SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC2tog. Total – 3 Sts. Turn.

Row 3. Ch 1, SC in each St across. Total – 3 Sts. Turn.

Row 4. Ch 1, 2 SC in first St, SC in next St, 2 SC in next St. Total – 5 Sts. Turn.

Row 5. Ch 3, SC in 3rd Ch, SC in last St of previous Row and in each of next 4 Sts, do not turn, Ch 3, SC in 3rd Ch (work under back loop), join with Sl St to the side of a hat. Fasten off.

Red Stripe

The red stripe on the hat can be embroidered or crocheted.

To crochet it: with red cotton thread size 3 and hook 2.75 mm, Ch 6. Fasten off. Sew it onto the hat.

Finishing

Block all parts as necessary. Sew on small the white heart for the teeth, then the nose and hat. Attach googly eyes, if you wish – embroider the whiskers.

Your groundhog is complete and ready to see his shadow!
