Crochet Simple Two Stitch Blanket – Free Pattern

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms 
– This lap blanket measures approximately 39 ½ inches wide and 44 ½ inches long. It’s a great size for draping over your legs to keep comfy and cozy
– Gauge is 4×4 inches = 11 rows, each containing 12 HDC stitches
– Turning CH 1 and CH 2 do not count as stitches throughout
– This pattern can be easily adjusted in size. To make it wider, add the desired number of CH stitches. To make your blanket longer, continue the row repeat. Making a larger blanket will increase the yardage required
– Beginner tip: place a stitch marker in the last stitch of your row (before turning CH). When you crochet the next row and reach that stitch, you’ll know that’s the end of the row and the placement for the final stitch
– If the idea of weaving in yarn tails at the end is intimidating, you can work them in as you go. Hold the yarn tails over the top of the row you are crocheting into and make your stitches over them. They’ll be hidden and tucked away
– If your blanket is fanning out or becoming narrow, double check your stitch count. It can be helpful to count your stitches after every few rows to make sure they are consistent

Materials Needed: – Worsted weight acrylic yarn in three colours. 732 yards (colour A), 261 yards (colour B [includes edging]), 549 yards (colour C)

– I used WeCrochet/Knit Picks Brava in the following colourways: colour A “White” (4 skeins), colour B “Cobblestone Heather” (2 skeins), colour C “Dove Heather” (3 skeins)

– 5mm hook (I used my Furls Streamline “Moonlight”)

– Yarn needle

– Scissors

– Measuring tape

– Stitch markers

Stitches:

CH – Chain

SS – Slip Stitch

HDC – Half Double Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, CH 121 and start row 1 in the second CH from your hook.

Rows 1-15:Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 HDC. CH 1 and turn for all rows except row 15. After completing row 15, fasten off and then turn your work.

(120 HDC stitches)

Row 16:
Into the first stitch, join yarn colour B with a SS and CH 2. Into the same stitch and each stitch across, place 1 DC. Fasten off and then turn your work.

(120 DC stitches)

Rows 17-31:Into the first stitch, join yarn colour C with SS and CH 1. Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 HDC. CH 1 and turn for all rows except row 31. After completing row 31, fasten off and then turn your work.

(120 HDC stitches)

Row 32:Repeat row 16 (colour B)

Rows 33-47:Into the first stitch, join yarn colour A with SS and CH 1. Repeat rows 1-15.

Row 48:
Repeat row 16 (colour B)

Rows 49-63:Repeat rows 17-31 (colour C)

Row 64:
Repeat row 16 (colour B)

Rows 65-79:Into the first stitch, join yarn colour A with SS and CH 1. Repeat rows 1-15.

Row 80:Repeat row 16 (colour B)

Rows 81-95:Repeat rows 17-31 (colour C)

Row 96:Repeat row 16 (colour B)

Rows 97-111:Into the first stitch, join yarn colour A with SS and CH 1. Repeat rows 1-15.After row 111, fasten off and weave in all ends.

Edging:(I find fastening off and re-joining the yarn in the middle of an edge provides a neater finish for the border. If you have a different method for working your border, please feel free!)

When crocheting your edging into the top and bottom of your project, you will be working into the stitches as normal. For the edges which are the sides of the blanket, you’ll need to space out your HDC stitches evenly. If you place them too close together, it can cause your edging to ripple. If you place them too far apart, it can cause the sides to pull. The most important aspect is making sure that both side edges contain an equal number of stitches (PHOTO A)

Join yarn into the middle of any edge with a SS and CH 1. Evenly place 1 HDC around all edges. Make 1 HDC, CH 2, 1 HDC into each corner space. SS into the beginning CH 1, fasten off and weave in all ends.
