Materials

  • red heart super saver medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/364 yds/198 g per skein): 2 oz each # 390 hot red and # 312 black
  • size H/8/5 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • tapestry needle
  • 12 mm glue-on or sew-on wiggle eyes: 2 (optional)
  • Craft glue (optional )
  • Fiberfill
  • Stitch marker

5 dc =1 1/2 inches; 2 dc Rnds=1 inch

Pattern notes:

Weave in loose ends as work progresses

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

Chain-3 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated.

Do not join rounds unless otherwise stated. use stitch marker to mark round and move as work progresses

Do not use optional wiggle eyes for child younger than 3;instead,use yarn scraps to embroider eyes,if desired.

Purse

Body

Rnd 1: Beg at center bottom of body, with hot red, ch 4,11 dc in 4th ch from hook (3 sk chs count as first dc), join (see pattern notes) in first dc.(12 dc)

Rnd 2: ch3 (see pattern notes)

Dc in same st as beg ch-3,2 dc in each dc around, join in first dc.(24 dc)

Rnd 3:

Ch3,2 dc in next dc,[dc in next dc,2 dc in next dc] around, join in first dc.(36 dc)

Rnd 4:

Ch 3, dc in next dc,2 dc in next dc,[dc in each of next 2dc,2 dc in next dc] around, join in first dc.(48 dc)

Rnds 5-10:

Ch 3,dc in each dc around, join in first dc.(48 dc)

Rnd 11: [ ch 3 ,sl st in next dc] around. Fasten off.

Head:

Rnd 1: with black,ch 5,2 sc in 2nd ch from hook,sc in each of next 2chs,4sc in last foundation ch,sc in each of next 2 chs,2 sc in last ch,do not join, placeS marker (see pattern notes ).(12 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc in first sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each next 2 sc]

Rnd 5: Sc in each of next 24 sc. Note: Looking at the Head, mark off 6 sc sts across long edge of top of Head, first sc is for first antenna, sc in next 4 sc and 2nd antenna in 6th sc.

Rnd 6: Sc in each sc to center

Stuff Head with fiberfill, and with antenna centered at top of Head, sew between rnds 4-8 of lower portion of Body.

Sew Spots randomly to Body as desired.

DRAWSTRING

Rnd 1: With black, ch 3, join in first ch to form a ring, ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around, join in first sc.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 4: [Sc dee (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sc] 6 times. (6 sc)

Stuff rnds 1-4 lightly with fiberfill.

Rnd 5: [Sl st in next sc, sk next sc] 3 times, ch 60, leaving a 12- inch length of yarn, fasten off.

FINISHING

With Head at center front, flat­ten Body to find center of each side. Thread rem length of Drawstring on yarn needle, beg at left-hand side of Body, weave needle through sps between sts ofrnd 10, ending in same sp next to where you started. Secure end of ch in base rnd 5 of Drawstring. Fasten off. Thread rem length of 2nd Drawstring on yarn needle, beg at right­hand side of Body and weave through same sps as previous weave in rnd 10, ending in same sp next to where you started. Secure end of ch in base of rnd 5 of Drawstring. Fasten off.

Pull stuffed parts of Draw­string to close Purse. Attach wiggle eyes to Head or use yarn scraps to embroider eyes (see Pattern Notes).
