  • Worsted Weight Yarn: Light color (for Criss-Cross) — 32 oz; Medium color (for Light Squares) — 17 oz; Dark color (for Dark Squares & Triangles) — 24 oz.
  • Crochet Hook:Size G-6 (4.25 mm).

JOINING WITH SC

When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

Motifs are made individually and then sewed together.


Criss-Cross Motif(Make 96)

Row 1:(Right Side) With the light color, ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 13 ch, 3 sc in next ch (to start point), sc in next 14 ch.
Rows 2-24:Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, skip first sc, sc in next 14 sc, 3 sc in both loops of next sc (point), working in back loops only, sc in next 13 sc, skip next sc, sc in last sc.

At the end of Row 24, work should measure about 5 inches in length along center. Finish off and weave in ends.

Light Squares(Make 24)

Rnd 1:(Right Side) Starting at center, with Medium Color, ch 4; join with sl st to first ch to form ring; ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), 2 dc in ring, ch 1, (3 dc in ring, ch 1) 3 times; join with sl st to first dc.
Rnd 2:Ch 1, sc in first dc, sc in next 2 dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-1 sp, * sc in next 3 dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-1 sp; repeat from * twice more; join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 3-11:Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp; join.

At the end of Rnd 11, there are 23 sc on each side of square and it should measure about 4½ inches square. Finish off and weave in ends.

Dark Squares(Make 38)

Row 1:(Right Side) With the dark color, ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (sc in next ch) across.
Rows 2-24:Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

At the end of Row 24, work should measure about 5 inches square. Finish off and weave in ends.

Dark Triangles(Make 20)

Row 1:(Right Side) With the dark color, ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (sc in next ch) across.
Row 2:Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across to 2nd last sc, skip next sc, sc in last sc.
Row 3:Ch 1, turn, skip first sc, (sc in next sc) across.
Rows 4-24:Repeat Rows 2-3 alternately, ending with Row 2.

At the end of Row 24, work should measure ½ of Dark Square diagonally. Finish off and weave in ends.

— Using diagram as guide, arrange Motifs in position and whip-stitch together on wrong side.

Border

Rnd 1:With right side facing, join the Medium color with sc to one corner, sc around entire afghan, spacing sc so that work lies flat and uneven edges are straightened out, working 3 sc in each corner st; join with sl st to back loop of first sc.
Rnds 2-3:Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc around; join.

At the end of Rnd 3, finish off and weave in ends.
