Pattern Details

Size: Size to preference. 

Skill Level: Advanced beginner (skull cap) to intermediate.

Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations for stitches used.

Recommended Yarn: 10 ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight yarn. Note: Yarns of other weight can also be used, however, additional reduction rounds may be required in addition to those provided in the instructions.

Hook: 5.5-6mm/I–J, depending on chosen yarn and individual tension. Swatch to determine the most suitable hook size. The skull cap should have some stretch/positive ease.

Gauge: Not important for this item. 

Pattern Synopsis: Skull cap is constructed bottom up (to peak), using V-St and then a brim is added separately after. Multiple brim options are available in the pdf pattern instructions. Optional flower applique can be added for some extra charm. The second brim option and two flower applique instructions are available in the paid pdf only.

Insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through a loop (2 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first loop on hook only (2 loops on hook), spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane, yoh, pull yarn through remaining two loops on hook.

Skull Cap

FSC Round: Leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to later sew in securely FSCƚ a multiple of four that measures relaxed the required circumference, Sl St into first FSC. [n FSC (joined to form a circle)]

ƚIf preferred, the following ch method can be substituted for the FSC foundation round:

Ch the required length, Sl St into first Ch [n Ch circle].

Ch 1, SC in each st around, Sl St into first st [n SC].

Round 1: Beg V-St in first st, sk next three st, {V-St in next st, sk next three st} rep around circumference, DC in first st (same st that Beg V-St was made), Sl St into beg DCStndSt of first V-St. [n/4 V-St]

Round 2: Sl St across to first Ch 2 Sp, Beg V-St in first Ch 2 Sp, sk next four st, {V-St in next Ch 2 Sp, sk next four st} rep around circumference, DC in first st (same st that Beg V-St was made), Sl St into beg DCStndSt of first V-St. [n/4 V-St]

Rounds 3+: Rep Round 2 until skull cap is approximately 3/4 of the required length. 

Shape Peak Round 1: Sl St across to first Ch 2 Sp, Beg Dec V-St in first Ch 2 Sp, sk next four st, {Dec V-St in next Ch 2 Sp, sk next four st} rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt of first Dec V-St. [n/4 Dec V-St]

Shape Peak Round 2: Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp, Beg Dec V-St in first Ch 1 Sp, sk next two st, {Dec V-St in next Ch 1 Sp, sk next two st} rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt of first Dec V-St. [n/4 Dec V-St]

Shape Peak Round 3: Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp, DCStndSt in first Ch 1 Sp, sk next two st, {DC in next Ch 1 Sp, sk next two st} rep around circumference, Sl St into beg DCStndSt. [n/4 DC]

Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in securely.


Brim

Either work one of the simple brim options below or a brim of your own design.

Brim Option 1

Round 1: With RS facing join yarn in base of first FSC, Ch 1, SC in each st around the circumference, Sl St into first SC. [n SC]

Optional Round 2: Note: This round can be repeated if additional length required. Ch 1, SC in each st around the circumference, Sl St into first SC. [n SC]

Optional Final Round: Ch 1, Crab St/Spn St in each st around the circumference, Sl St into first Crab St/Spn St. [n Crab St/Spn St.]

Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in securely.

Finishing

Sew in all ends securely on WS.

Or if preferred, before sewing in the ends, weave stitch the yarn tail in and out of each two st around top circumference, then pull on yarn tail to cinch closed the peak of the skull cap.
