WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • 5g colour A 4-ply milk cotton yarn
  • 15g colour B 4-ply milk cotton yarn
  • 100g colour C 4-ply milk cotton yarn
  • 3.5 or 4.5 mm crochet hook*
    *The size of the hook only slightly changes the fit of the hat. Use what you think will best suit you or the person who will wear the hat. For this project, I used a 4.5mm crochet hook.
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors

Child – approx. 25.5 cm (10 in) in diameter

Adult – approx. 29 cm (11.4 in) in diameter

  • mc – magic circle
  • ss – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • dcinc – two double crochets in one stitch
  • dec – decrease/double crochet together
  • tc – triple crochet
  • tcinc – two triple crochets in one stitch
  • fphdc – front post half double crochet
  • bphdc – back post half double crochet

PART 1: THE CHERRY BLOSSOM

R1: Using yarn colour A, mc, sc1 [tc3, sc1], repeat [ ] 3 times. For the last petal, tc3, ss into the first sc to lock round. Cut yarn, weave in the ends.

R2: Change yarn colour B, connecting it to the middle tc of any of the petals. Sc into the same stitch [dc3 into the sc in between the petals in the previous round, sc into the next middle tc of the following petal], repeat [ ] 4 times to complete 5 petals, ss to lock.

R3: Ch5, dc2 into the next stitch, ch2, ss in the next stitch [ch2, dc2 into the next stitch, ch1, tc3 into the next stitch, ch1, dc2 into the next stitch, ch2, ss into the next stitch, repeat [ ] 4 times for 4 petals. Complete the last petal with ch2, dc2 into the next stitch, ch1, and tc2 into the same stitch as ch5. Ss into the fourth stitch of ch5 to lock.

R4: Ss into the next 2 stitches and into the ch space, sc into the same space, ch1, sc into the next ch2 space, ch3, dc5 into the middle tc of the petal. [Ch3, sc into the next ch2 space, ch1, sc into the next ch2 space, ch3, dc5 into the middle tc of the petal], repeat [ ] 4 times, ch3, ss into the first sc to lock.

R5: Ch1 [sc into the ch1 space, dc4 into the ch3 space, dc into each of the next 2 stitches, ch4, skip one stitch, dc into the next two stitches, dc4 into the ch3 space], repeat [ ] for all petals in the round, ss into the first sc to lock. Cut yarn, weave in the ends.

R6: Join yarn colour C to a double crochet stitch at the bottom of the petal, sc into the same stitch, [sc in all the succeeding dc stitches until you reach the ch4 space. Tc3 into the skipped stitch below the ch4 space. Sc into the remaining double crochet stitches on the petal, dc1 into the sc from the previous round.] [Sc, repeat [ ] and start again with sc.] Repeat previous [ ] 3 times to complete 5 petals. Ss to lock. (80 stitches)

R7: Ch2 [dc into every stitch until you reach the middle tc, dcinc into the middle tc, dc into the next tc and the rest of the succeeding sc stitches. Tcinc into the dc at the base of the petal], repeat [ ] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (90 stitches)

PART 2: THE HAT (CHILD)

R8: Ch3 (counted as dc1) dc3, dcinc. Repeat [dc4, dcinc] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (108 stitches)

R9: Ch3 (counted as dc1) dc4, dcinc. Repeat [dc5, dcinc] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (126 stitches)

R10-R13: Ch3 (counted as dc1), dc into every stitch for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (126 stitches per round)

R14: Ch3 (counted as dc1), dc4, dec. Repeat [dc5, dec] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (108 stitches)

R15: Ch3, (counted as dc1), dc3, dec. Repeat [dc4, dec] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (90 stitches)

R16: Ch3, (counted as dc1), dc2, dec. Repeat [dc3, dec] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (72 stitches)

R17: Ch3, dc into every stitch for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (72 stitches)

R18-21: Ch3, alternate between fphdc and bphdc for the rest of the round, ss to lock. Cut yarn, weave in the ends, and you’re done!

PART 2: THE HAT (ADULT)

R8: Ch3 (counted as dc1) dc3, dcinc. Repeat [dc4, dcinc] for the rest of the round, ss to lock. (108 stitches)
