Crochet Beautiful Placemat
Crocheting a beautiful placemat can be a fun and rewarding project to add a touch of charm to your dining table. You will need:
- #4 worsted weight cotton such as lilly sugar and cream, I love this cotton or any worsted weight yarn of your choosing. I used Women’s Institute Aran weight cotton (mine was 525 yards approx.) and lily sugar and cream (1 skein).
- Size 4mm hook
- Stitch markers optional
- Scissors
Abbreviations:
- Ch—Chain
- FSC – Foundation single crochet
- PSC – paired single crochet
- St(s)—Stitch(es)
- Sk – skip
- SS – slip stitch
- Sp(s)—Space(s)
- Rep—Repeat
- *to*–Repeat the instructions written between the two *
- FO – fasten off
Special Stitches:
- FSC
- PSC – sc in the first stitch of row only, *insert hook into same sp and yo pull through, insert hook into next space and yo pull through, yo pull through all three loops on hook.*
Pattern:
In colour A:
Row 1: FSC 43, CH1, turn
Row 2: PSC 43, CH1, turn
Rows 3-33: Repeat row 2 but do not turn at the end of row 33.
Border:
Round 1: In the last st of row 33 *(SC, CH2, SC), this will create your corner.
PSC in next 31 sts, (SC, CH2, SC) in the next st PSC 41 sts * repeat from * to * two times.
SS to first SC
Round 2: Join colour B to any CH2 sp.
CH4, sk1, SS in next st, *CH3, sk1, SS to next st* around
Note: you should have 18 ch3 spaces along the short side and 23 CH3 spaces along the longer side.
Round 3-5: SS to next CH3 sp, *CH3, SS to next CH3 sp* around
Note: you will find that you create a ch3 for each corner again. If you cannot see them, gently stretch your coaster a little, and they should be visible. You may want to use stitch markers to mark each corner.
Round 6: Attach colour A to any corner.
*(2SC, CH2, 2SC) in corner sp, (2SC in next CH2 sp) along to next corner CH3 sp*
Repeat *to* 3 more times.
SS to first SC
Round 7: Ch1, SC in each st around and in each corner CH2 sp ensure you do (2SC, CH2, 2SC)
SS to first sc.
FO and weave in ends
